Suriname & Dominican Republic Draw 0-0

Ten-Man Dominican Republic Makes History in Heroic 0-0 Draw with Suriname

In a match that will be remembered for its sheer defensive resilience, a 10-man Dominican Republic side held on for a historic 0-0 draw against a dominant but ultimately frustrated Suriname team in the Concacaf Gold Cup. The result was a tale of two momentous clean sheets, earned under vastly different circumstances.

Pujol’s Early Exit Changes Everything

The game was thrown into disarray at the 30-minute mark when Dominican Republic defender Edgar Pujol was shown a straight red card by referee Ismael Cornejo. Reduced to 10 men with an hour left to play, it seemed an insurmountable task for Marcelo Neveleff’s side.

What followed was a masterclass in defensive organization and sheer grit. The Dominican Republic became the first team since 2013 to keep a clean sheet in a Gold Cup match despite having a player sent off in the first half, a testament to their incredible resolve.

Suriname’s Siege

As expected, Suriname took complete control following the red card. They laid siege to the Dominican goal, recording a team-record 68.3% possession and completing more than double the passes of their opponents (562 to 251). Winger Gyrano Kerk was a constant threat, completing seven dribbles, the joint-most by any player in a Gold Cup match since 2013.

Despite their dominance and 15 shots, they could not find a way through the disciplined Dominican wall. For Suriname, the result was also historic, as they secured their first-ever clean sheet in the Concacaf Gold Cup in what was their sixth match in the competition’s history.

A Point Earned, A Lesson Learned

While Suriname will be disappointed not to have capitalized on their man advantage, the Dominican Republic will celebrate this point as if it were a victory. Creative sparkplug Peter Federico was still influential, creating four chances and drawing six fouls, but the night belonged to the collective defensive unit that refused to break. The scoreless draw stands as a powerful statement of their team spirit and tactical discipline.
