Panama National Football Team
Federación Panameña de Fútbol
(Panama Football Association)
Founded in 1937
The Panama national football team, known as Los Canaleros, represents Panama in men’s international football and operates under the governance of the Panamanian Football Federation. FEPAFUT was a founding member of CONCACAF in 1961. Panama made its first appearance in the FIFA World Cup in 2018 in Russia, marking a historic moment for the country’s footballing history. Although they finished bottom of their group, their journey to the World Cup was a significant achievement.
Throughout their history, Panama has experienced notable successes in regional competitions. They finished as runners-up in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2005, 2013, and 2023, showcasing their competitive spirit on the international stage. Additionally, Panama won the Copa Centroamericana in 2009, defeating Costa Rica in the final, and have achieved third-place finishes on multiple occasions.
Panama’s performances in the Gold Cup and World Cup qualifiers have been memorable. In the 2011 Gold Cup, they topped their group for the first time and reached the semi-finals, while in the 2013 edition, they advanced to the final but lost to the United States. Their journey in the 2014 World Cup qualifying round saw them narrowly miss out on advancing to the playoffs, despite a valiant effort against the United States.
In the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign, Panama made history by securing their spot in the tournament for the first time. Their victory over Costa Rica, which included a dramatic late goal, led to national celebrations and even a presidential declaration of a national holiday. Although their World Cup debut resulted in three defeats, including a historic first goal scored by Felipe Baloy, their participation was a source of pride for the nation.
Overall, Panama’s national team continues to make strides in international football, with their World Cup qualification standing as a testament to their progress and potential on the global stage.
