Brazil National Football Team
Confederação Brasileira de Futebol
(Brazil Football Association)
Founded in 1914
The Brazil national football team, known as Seleção Brasileira de Futebol in Portuguese and nicknamed Seleção Canarinha (“Canary Squad”), is one of the most successful teams in men’s international football. Administered by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), Brazil has been a FIFA member since 1923 and a member of CONMEBOL since 1916.
Brazil’s legacy in the FIFA World Cup is unparalleled, with five titles to their name: in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. Their dominance extends beyond victories, boasting the best overall performance in the tournament’s history. The team holds records for the most wins, highest goal difference, and points earned. Brazil’s triumphs span continents, winning in Europe, South America, North America, and Asia. They’re also the only team to have participated in every World Cup without absence or playoffs. Additionally, Brazil clinched victory in the FIFA Confederations Cup four times and secured gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Consistently ranked high in FIFA’s standings, Brazil holds the record for the most Team of the Year first ranking wins. The team’s peak performance in 1970 is widely regarded as the greatest in football history, although other squads from 1958–62 and 1994–2002 are also esteemed. Notably, Brazil went undefeated for 35 consecutive matches in 1996, holding a world record for 25 years.
Throughout its history, Brazil has cultivated intense rivalries, particularly with Argentina, Italy, Uruguay, and the Netherlands. These matches, often referred to as classics, evoke fierce competition and passionate support from fans worldwide. Overall, Brazil’s footballing prowess and legacy make them a dominant force in the sport’s history.
