Chile National Football Team
Federación de Fútbol de Chile
(Chile Football Federation)
Founded 1895
The Chile national football team, known as La Roja, represents Chile in men’s international football and operates under the Federación de Fútbol de Chile (Chilean Football Federation), established in 1895. Chile has a rich footballing history, participating in nine FIFA World Cup tournaments and hosting the 1962 World Cup where they achieved their highest-ever finish, third place.
One of Chile’s greatest achievements came in 2016 when they clinched their first Copa América title on home soil, defeating Argentina in the final. They successfully defended their title in the Copa América Centenario the following year, overcoming Argentina once more in a thrilling final. Prior to these triumphs, Chile had reached the Copa América final four times without success.
The team’s history is marked by notable moments and challenges. In 1930, Chile was among the thirteen teams that competed in the inaugural FIFA World Cup, and in 1962, as the host nation, they secured third place in the tournament. However, the 1989 Maracanazo scandal tarnished their reputation when goalkeeper Roberto Rojas feigned injury during a crucial World Cup qualifier against Brazil, resulting in a ban from the qualifiers for the 1994 World Cup.
Chile has seen periods of resurgence under various managers. Marcelo Bielsa led the team to success in the 2010 World Cup, reaching the round of 16, and Claudio Borghi followed with qualification for the 2014 World Cup. Under Jorge Sampaoli, Chile won their first Copa América title in 2015 and their second in the Copa América Centenario in 2016, defeating Argentina in both finals.
However, Chile’s failure to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup marked the end of their “golden generation,” highlighting the challenges faced by the team. Despite this setback, Chile’s footballing legacy remains strong, with a proud tradition of competitive performances on the international stage.
