Argentina Predicted Copa America Roster

Lionel Messi Focused on Copa America

Argentina’s football icon Lionel Messi remains steadfastly focused on leading his nation to success in the upcoming Copa America tournament, dismissing speculation about his international future beyond the event. With Argentina grouped alongside Canada, Chile, and Peru in the tournament in the United States, Messi aims to secure a second successive continental title for his country.

Having previously hinted that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar might mark his international swan song, Messi’s outlook has evolved. While acknowledging that Qatar could indeed be his final World Cup appearance, he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of competing in the 2026 edition, slated to be held across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. At 36, Messi finds himself in a remarkable phase of form with Argentina and expresses his commitment to representing his country as long as he feels capable.

“As long as I feel good and I can continue to deliver, I’m going to do it (continue playing with Argentina). All I’m thinking about today is getting to the Copa America and being able to play in it,” Messi told ESPN.

Reflecting on his prior retirement considerations, Messi notes a significant shift in his mindset. “It seemed that after the 2022 World Cup I was retiring, now I want to be with the team more than ever. We are experiencing a special moment, I want to enjoy it to the fullest, without thinking two or three years ahead, which in football is a lot.”

The Copa America holds both bitter and sweet memories for Messi. Despite reaching the final in the 2016 centenary edition, Argentina fell short, losing to Chile on penalties. However, redemption came in 2021 when Messi led his nation to clinch the continental title. Building on this success, Argentina secured victory in the 2022 Finalissima against Italy and triumphed over France in the subsequent World Cup final.

“Maybe we’ll do well in the Copa America and everything will work out for me to continue. Maybe not. It’s hard,” Messi commented on the uncertainties surrounding his future. “Being world champion changed me in the peace of mind knowing that, in my job, I could achieve everything.”

Looking ahead, the Copa America promises to be a fiercely contested affair, with six guest teams from the CONCACAF region, including the US and Mexico, adding further intrigue. Argentina, are grouped with Canada, Chile, and Peru for the 2024 Copa America.
