Costa Rica National Football Team
Federación Costarricense de Fútbol
(Costa Rica Football Association)
Founded in 1921
The Costa Rica national football team, also known as Los Ticos, has cemented its status as a dominant force in men’s international football, reflecting the nation’s rich footballing heritage. Administered by the Costa Rican Football Federation (FEDEFUTBOL), the team holds esteemed membership in FIFA, CONCACAF, and the Central American Football Union (UNCAF), embodying the nation’s passion for the beautiful game since 1927.
Regarded as the most successful national football team in Central America, Costa Rica’s trophy cabinet boasts three CONCACAF Championships and four Copa Centroamericana titles prior to the tournament’s integration into the CONCACAF Nations League in 2017. Their consistent presence on the world stage is further underscored by their remarkable feat of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup on six occasions, a testament to their sustained excellence.
Since the late 1980s, La Sele has commanded respect as a formidable contender in CONCACAF, often ranking among the top teams in the region. Their noteworthy performance in the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy marked a significant milestone, propelling them into the tournament’s knockout stage in their inaugural appearance. Subsequent qualifications in 2002 and 2006 solidified Costa Rica’s reputation as a footballing powerhouse in the Americas.
In 2014, Costa Rica scripted a compelling chapter in football history with an unprecedented run in Brazil. Surpassing expectations, they emerged as the group winners in a formidable pool featuring former champions Uruguay, Italy, and England. Their heroic journey culminated in a historic quarter-final berth, highlighted by a gripping encounter against Greece and goalkeeper Keylor Navas’ standout performance. Although their World Cup odyssey concluded with a gallant defeat to the Netherlands, their resilient display captured the imagination of football enthusiasts worldwide.
Despite subsequent World Cup campaigns in 2018 and 2022 ending in group stage exits, La Sele’s enduring legacy endures. Their unwavering commitment to excellence and steadfast representation of Costa Rican football values serve as a source of inspiration for fans and aspiring athletes alike, ensuring that the spirit of La Sele continues to thrive on the international stage.
