Mexico National Football Team
Federación Mexicana de Fútbol
(Mexican Football Federation)
Founded in 1922
The Mexico national football team, known as Selección de fútbol de México in Spanish, proudly represents Mexico on the international stage, overseen by the Mexican Football Federation (Federación Mexicana de Fútbol). Competing within the CONCACAF region, Mexico has a storied history in football.
With a remarkable record of seventeen qualifications, Mexico has been a consistent presence in the FIFA World Cup since 1994, joining the elite group of six nations achieving this feat. Their journey began in the inaugural World Cup match against France on July 13, 1930. Noteworthy performances include reaching the quarter-finals in the 1970 and 1986 editions, both hosted by Mexico, highlighting their prowess on home soil. Excitement is building for their third hosting stint in 2026.
Within CONCACAF, Mexico holds a distinguished position, boasting an impressive tally of twelve confederation titles. This includes nine triumphs in the CONCACAF Gold Cup and three victories in the CONCACAF Championships. Additionally, Mexico has clinched two NAFC Championships, a North American Nations Cup, a CONCACAF Cup, and two gold medals in the Central American and Caribbean Games.
Among CONCACAF peers, Mexico stands out as one of the select few to have excelled in major football tournaments. Their victories in the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2012 Summer Olympics underscore their status as a footballing powerhouse in the region. Notably, Mexico remains the only CONCACAF team to have claimed an official FIFA competition, solidifying their place in football history.
Beyond CONCACAF boundaries, Mexico has showcased its talent in the Copa América, participating from 1993 to 2016. While facing tough competition, they secured runner-up positions in 1993 and 2001, along with three third-place finishes, demonstrating their ability to compete at a high level internationally.
